The Making of the TH900's Lacquer-Finished Housing

Features

A lacquered Bordeaux-finished housing that delivers premium sound quality and the joy of ownership

The surface finish of the wooden parts is achieved using a lacquer craft technique uniquely developed by Sakamoto Otoshiro Shoten Co., Ltd., a company founded in 1900 (Meiji 33) that brings Japanese traditional craftsmanship to modern industrial products. The lacquer used consists of a base black lacquer and an adhesive lacquer for applying the foil. To express a dignified sense of depth, several types of silver foil, smoked with sulfur, are applied in a torn-paper-like manner.

Wood Type: Mizume Cherry

A premium wood species native to Japan, derived from a variety of the Japanese birch (Betula). Known for its fine, dense grain and hardness, Mizume Cherry yields a beautiful surface finish, making it ideal for furniture manufacturing. For the TH909, skilled artisans meticulously hand-finish each piece.

Features a BioDyna diaphragm utilizing ultra-fine bio-cellulose fiber material

Leveraging years of accumulated expertise, we blend biocellulose fiber with other fibers under optimal conditions. This achieves low specific gravity, high Young’s modulus, and high internal loss. Alongside delicate, high-resolution reproduction of beautiful mid-to-high frequencies, the adoption of a free edge with excellent linearity faithfully reproduces even the large-amplitude low-to-mid frequencies.

ー What is Bio-Cellulose Fiber? ー

Bio-cellulose fibers are produced using advanced biotechnology. Each fiber has a thickness of 20 to 50 nm (nanometers), making it an ultra-fine fiber approximately 1/1000th the thickness of natural plant fibers (such as cotton). This fiber is highly pure alpha-cellulose, containing almost no harmful impurities and exhibiting the highest level of crystallinity. These ultra-fine bio-cellulose fibers possess exceptional capabilities for reproducing mid-to-high frequencies. Combining them with various other fibers in appropriate blends allows for the creation of sound quality that integrates the characteristics of each fiber, enabling the production of sound at a significantly higher level. Leveraging our expertise accumulated over many years, we have established technology for mass-producing high-performance diaphragms by blending bio-cellulose fibers with other fibers under optimal conditions.

The magnetic circuit employing a repulsive magnetic field incorporates an ultra-powerful driver unit with a magnetic flux density of 1.5 tesla.

Featuring a neodymium magnet with a magnetic flux density of 1.5 tesla, it delivers an expansive dynamic range through a low-distortion, ultra-powerful high-performance magnetic circuit.

The housing opening incorporates a double-layered aluminum etched part.

The opening features a unique design with double-layered aluminum etched parts that change appearance depending on light intensity and angle. Furthermore, its aperture ratio and the repeated fine-tuning of each internal component recreate a natural soundstage that is comfortable and fatigue-free.

Includes a high-purity 7N-grade OFC unbalanced cable (ET-H3.0N7UB)

In addition to achieving high resolution, this cable includes a 7N (99.99999%) grade high-purity OFC (Oxygen-Free Copper) unbalanced cable, essential for expressing this lustrous quality. It eliminates impurities to the utmost limit and enhances transmission capability. Furthermore, the plug sleeves are made of highly durable duralumin.

Equipped with detachable connector ports and utilizing 7N-grade cables for internal wiring.

Features detachable connector terminals with rhodium plating for high hardness, excellent wear resistance, and corrosion resistance, along with detachable contact terminals on the headphone body. Supports balanced connections using the optional XLR terminal cable (ET-H3.0N7BL).

Ear pads featuring low-rebound cushions to reduce sound leakage

We have specially designed ear pads that fit snugly around the back of the ear to minimize sound leakage. Featuring low-rebound cushions and premium synthetic leather, they provide a comfortable feel against the skin and a pleasant wearing experience even during extended use.

FAQ

Q
Are earpads available as service parts?
A

Replacement parts are available.
Product name: EX-EP-99

Q
How do I care for my lacquer-finished housing?
A

The same method as for ordinary lacquerware is fine. For daily maintenance, wipe with a soft cloth.
No special oil or polish is required.

Excessive drying may cause cracking, but there is no need to moisten the lacquer every time. In fact, please note that lacquer tends to leave traces of water.
