Traditional monitor design elevated by cutting-edge audio technology. Introducing the "GX160BJ," a 16cm 2-way speaker system that meticulously captures the very essence of music.

This product embodies the philosophy of professional reference monitors that Fostex has cultivated over many years. It is the latest model in the GX series, featuring a newly developed titanium dome tweeter paired with a proprietary HR cone woofer, and has been meticulously tuned to achieve the ideal two-way system. Through high-fidelity reproduction that meticulously captures the very essence of music and creates a vivid, lifelike soundstage right before your eyes, it delivers a profoundly moving listening experience and pure listening pleasure.

Features

・Newly developed 1-inch titanium ridge-dome tweeter
The tweeter features the newly developed FT36TD 1-inch dome tweeter, which utilizes a diaphragm formed from titanium in a ridge-dome configuration. Combined with an optimally shaped diffuser, it delivers clear, high-resolution sound quality on par with that of a reference monitor.

FT36TD Tweeter

・The Ridge Dome design disperses resonance by varying the distance from the voice coil to the dome’s apex. This disperses the natural resonance that causes coloration while delivering the fast response characteristic of metal diaphragms.
・The titanium diaphragm and voice coil bobbin are bonded using two types of adhesives with different properties, ensuring that the voice coil’s movement is accurately transmitted to the diaphragm. The voice coil winding uses a short-type design that remains within the magnetic field of the magnetic circuit, resulting in improved power handling and high-precision high-frequency reproduction with low distortion and excellent transient response.
・The voice coil uses a silver-plated silver-copper alloy tinsel wire that combines high sound quality with high durability. To adjust the acoustic balance, a polyester non-woven fabric with excellent acoustic properties is applied to the top of the magnetic circuit’s pole within the dome’s inner cavity.

・Fostex’s legendary HR cone woofer
The woofer features the FW168HR, a standard 16 cm unit. The use of an HR cone disperses peaks caused by segmented vibration at specific frequencies to eliminate resonance, while its lightweight yet highly rigid design delivers high-resolution, responsive bass reproduction.

・The “HR” in HR diaphragm stands for “HP ROTATION,” which refers to a design that applies a rotational twist in the circumferential direction to improve upon the HP (HYPERBOLIC PARABOLOIDAL) shape known in the field of structural mechanics. Since this shape is subjected only to shear stress as internal stress—with no bending stress—it achieves both light weight and high rigidity, resulting in a diaphragm with excellent characteristics that disperse resonance caused by segmental vibration. It is used in the woofers of Fostex’s professional monitor speakers, including the NF06 and RS10A.
・The diaphragm material is optimized and formed using a hybrid construction combining a base material made from an optimal ratio of wood pulp and non-wood pulp with high-performance materials such as ultra-high-modulus carbon fiber, PBO, and Celgaya pulp. This provides the ideal stiffness and internal damping for a woofer cone, achieving a sound propagation speed that rivals that of metal cones.
・The magnetic circuit is designed to minimize variations in the force factor, thereby stabilizing the amplitude of the vibrating system. It ensures linear tracking with minimal variation from low to high input levels, suppressing distortion, while the placement of a copper cap on the pole piece further reduces current distortion.
・The edge employs a UDR tangential design. This stands for “Up/Down Roll Tangential edge,” a structure that combines up-roll and down-roll elements on a tangential surface. Along with the HR diaphragm, it is used in the woofers of Fostex’s professional monitor speakers.

・High-quality network components, such as machined copper terminals with gold plating, are used.
The all-12dB/oct. crossover network utilizes high-quality components, including machined copper terminals with gold plating, high-fidelity film capacitors, and air-core coils. By connecting the leads of each component using gold-plated crimp terminals, we have thoroughly eliminated factors that degrade sound quality.Furthermore, each component is mounted on an MDF network board—which offers an optimal balance of rigidity and internal damping—and secured with adhesive to prevent excessive suppression of resonance and reverberation. Additionally, the tweeter features a fixed-resistance wire-wound attenuator that allows for adjustment of sound pressure.

・Use of Composite Panel Materials: Domestically Produced Enclosures
To reproduce a natural, rich sound, we have adhered to the fundamental philosophy established with the first-generation GX100 (released in February 2009). We use laminated composite panels made by bonding MDF—which maintains stable strength and shape while offering natural vibration damping and a moderate resonance—with an olefin-based decorative sheet on the surface. The baffle plate supporting the drivers is 20.5 mm thick, while the top, bottom, and side panels are 17.5 mm thick, ensuring appropriate rigidity while balancing resonance and reverberation. The rear panel is 14.5 mm thick to achieve optimal vibration and damping.
